Marvel Civil War was Marvel comics cross-over set in 2006 to 2007. The event saw the super heroes from the Marvel universe divided over the passage of a fictional Superhuman Registration Act. This act would forced all Super heroes to reveal there identities to the government, register with the government, and also become an official agent of the government like a fire fighter or police officer.
Now you’re wondering why the dickens would the Super heroes divide them selves over such an act that has been passed by the government of the United States of America. Well last time I checked the USA was meant to be a democracy. A place where you were free to choose your life style or choose what you want to do and when. Now this is the mainly focused at Super heroes, since
A The people, who chose to become superheroes, did so of their free will.
B These super heroes choose to be active when they wanted, they were working for a government agency like Shield.
C Why should the government tell them what to do, since the superheroes are civilians who risk thier lives on a daily bases, and they don,t need Uncle Sam telling them what to do.
In the Civil war their were three sides. Those who supported the registration act lead by Iron man with Mr Fantastic as his second in command. Then you had those who opposed the registration act lead by Captain America with Luke Cage as his second in Command. Finally there were those who stayed neutral in the war such as the Thing, most of the X men bar Wolverine who went on a rampage to hunt down Nitro, and Cable, oh and countless villains who were funnily enough terrified and opposed to the act, for obvious reason. Aka the rise of a superpower police state that would make crime near impossible.
Now what sort of event could cause the passage of such a controversial act? Well the cause was Stamford Bridge were the Super villain Nitro blew himself up while being caused by the super hero team The New Warriors for a reality television show. Yes a reality TV show. These Superheroes were chasing ratings by attacking ultra powered super villains. They were doomed from the star. Anyway six hundred civilians were killed in the blast including sixty children. The horror of such an event was the key event in the rise of the superhuman registration Act, but there were other events that contributed to the rise of SHRA (Super Human Registration Act). There was the Latveria terrorist attacks on New York as a result of the Secret War. Nick Fury being forced out of leadership of Shield, followed shortly after by Shield becoming heavily corrupt. Then there was Decimation. This saw most of the mutant population depowerd leaving only 198 left. The Hulks rampage in Las Vegas killing 29 people and a dog. Then there was an assault on Washington by the Titanium Man.
These events combined with Stamford Bridge were the reasons for the passage of SHRA.
Now the Comic itself was writing by Mark Millar (Wanted) and Art was done by Steve McNiven (Old Man Logan). The art is indeed very detailed and well done, keeping a well done comic book styled art that allows the person to imaging, what the comic book would be like in real life. Millar’s writing in the book is just brilliant. The writing allows the comic to come across as a real summer block buster in the form of a comic book. The dialogue is witty, ingenious and also maintains seriousness, and can swiftly shift it to a good joke to try to lighten the mood. The book itself as I have said is indeed a block buster but is also fairly serious with some humour, but due to dark setting of a divided marvel universe. There are some moments in here that shine right through such as Captain America escape from the Shield hellicarrier, The return of one of marvels more iconic Superheroes and avenger, and one brilliant final battle in the middle of New York, with one mighty surprising ending.
Finally, some general things I will say about Civil War. Some super heroes will come across as jerks or just plain stupid at times, or you will start thinking that surely be to god that this character or that character has more sense. Also in the Aftermath of the Civil War will leave some major changes to the face of the Marvel universe, so be ready to Embrace Change, because Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls there are going to be tons of shocks surprises and just wtf moments from Civil War and afterwards.
Anyway I hope you enjoyed this Review. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated
