Spike After the Fall

My apologies for taking so long to update my blog, I have been busy as of late in a number of things that I had to take care of. I am sorry about that and i do hope that ye will forgive me for such a long gap of time between this post and the last post. I will aim to not let this happen again.

Now on to the main feature Spike; After the Fall written by Brian Lynch and art done by Franco Urru. (Spoiler alert)

Spike: After the Fall takes place after the fifth and final season of Angel, and ties into The current Angel comic book ongoing series that is being published by IDW. The mini series depicts the city of Los Angeles being sent to Hell with the entire population of the city as well as the main cast of Angel and of course Spike. Spike of course being in the city at the time, when it was dragged to Hell is trapped there. Spike must then find a way to survive in a rapidly changing Los Angeles (Since every demon in hell is moving in to take a chunk of the city as there own)

Of course. Survival to Spike means being as comfortable as possible. Small problem though. Spike has become some what of a Good guy, due to events outside of his control. ( Falling in love with Buffy the vampire Slayer, having a chip in his head that prevented him from killing humans, and of course when the chip was removed, losing the taste of being bad.)

So Spike has to try and help the Humans who are following him out. Spike must also keep an Eye on Illyria, a woman who happens to be the human form of an ancient demon, which has returned in modern times and is now to Spike. But to be honest who is the more dominate person in this relation, i don’t know. I am leaning towards Illyria, do to one line she says when in her weird warrior woman persona says "I am not his pet. If anything, He is my pet" Ya i am afraid that i never watched Angel when it was on, so i am a bit behind the times with Spike and of course anyone who originated in Angel.

The Big Bad for this mini series is Granny Goodness. Just joking couldn’t resist. The Big Bad or the main Bad guy for you readers unfamiliar with Joss Wheoden terminology. is called Non. Non is a female demon of incredible strength and rapid regeneration if she able to drain the life force of any near by Humans. Her minions

Yes Ladies and Gentleman, Non's minions are evil bondage warrior woman. Told you these were unique.

Anyway the Comic itself is well done. The writing is super. The characters are interesting and keep you interested in the story. Spike sounds like Spike. The dialogue is enjoyable. The art is great.

In the end Spike; After the Fall is a great read, and i recommend that if your into Angel, or are a Joss Wheoden fan, that you read this comic. I shall now start to read the rest of the Angel Comics being published by IDW, and plan to pick up Angel season 1. Anyway thanks for reading and i hope to see you all in my next review

Irish Nerd comic review Marvel Civil War

Marvel Civil War was Marvel comics cross-over set in 2006 to 2007. The event saw the super heroes from the Marvel universe divided over the passage of a fictional Superhuman Registration Act. This act would forced all Super heroes to reveal there identities to the government, register with the government, and also become an official agent of the government like a fire fighter or police officer.

Now you’re wondering why the dickens would the Super heroes divide them selves over such an act that has been passed by the government of the United States of America. Well last time I checked the USA was meant to be a democracy. A place where you were free to choose your life style or choose what you want to do and when. Now this is the mainly focused at Super heroes, since
A The people, who chose to become superheroes, did so of their free will.
B These super heroes choose to be active when they wanted, they were working for a government agency like Shield.
C Why should the government tell them what to do, since the superheroes are civilians who risk thier lives on a daily bases, and they don,t need Uncle Sam telling them what to do.

In the Civil war their were three sides. Those who supported the registration act lead by Iron man with Mr Fantastic as his second in command. Then you had those who opposed the registration act lead by Captain America with Luke Cage as his second in Command. Finally there were those who stayed neutral in the war such as the Thing, most of the X men bar Wolverine who went on a rampage to hunt down Nitro, and Cable, oh and countless villains who were funnily enough terrified and opposed to the act, for obvious reason. Aka the rise of a superpower police state that would make crime near impossible.

Now what sort of event could cause the passage of such a controversial act? Well the cause was Stamford Bridge were the Super villain Nitro blew himself up while being caused by the super hero team The New Warriors for a reality television show. Yes a reality TV show. These Superheroes were chasing ratings by attacking ultra powered super villains. They were doomed from the star. Anyway six hundred civilians were killed in the blast including sixty children. The horror of such an event was the key event in the rise of the superhuman registration Act, but there were other events that contributed to the rise of SHRA (Super Human Registration Act). There was the Latveria terrorist attacks on New York as a result of the Secret War. Nick Fury being forced out of leadership of Shield, followed shortly after by Shield becoming heavily corrupt. Then there was Decimation. This saw most of the mutant population depowerd leaving only 198 left. The Hulks rampage in Las Vegas killing 29 people and a dog. Then there was an assault on Washington by the Titanium Man.

These events combined with Stamford Bridge were the reasons for the passage of SHRA.

Now the Comic itself was writing by Mark Millar (Wanted) and Art was done by Steve McNiven (Old Man Logan). The art is indeed very detailed and well done, keeping a well done comic book styled art that allows the person to imaging, what the comic book would be like in real life. Millar’s writing in the book is just brilliant. The writing allows the comic to come across as a real summer block buster in the form of a comic book. The dialogue is witty, ingenious and also maintains seriousness, and can swiftly shift it to a good joke to try to lighten the mood. The book itself as I have said is indeed a block buster but is also fairly serious with some humour, but due to dark setting of a divided marvel universe. There are some moments in here that shine right through such as Captain America escape from the Shield hellicarrier, The return of one of marvels more iconic Superheroes and avenger, and one brilliant final battle in the middle of New York, with one mighty surprising ending.

Finally, some general things I will say about Civil War. Some super heroes will come across as jerks or just plain stupid at times, or you will start thinking that surely be to god that this character or that character has more sense. Also in the Aftermath of the Civil War will leave some major changes to the face of the Marvel universe, so be ready to Embrace Change, because Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls there are going to be tons of shocks surprises and just wtf moments from Civil War and afterwards.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed this Review. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated

The Irish Nerd

Greetings Nerds, geeks and general internet explorers.

Hello to all who have stumbled upon this blog, I am Ciaran, but for all sakes during these blogs I shall be known as the Irish Nerd. Now what are you in for? Well to be honest, my blogs will explore a number of things. Comic books, movies, cartoons, role-playing games, books, videogames and general tings like what is Ireland like and where the hell did the Irish stereotype originate and other things

Now you are probably wondering why I am doing this or why should you care. Well first off, how you ever heard of an Irish Nerd, no funnily enough. Why? Well only in recent years Ireland has started to gain access to this whole new genre. Before the dawn of the twentieth century. Ireland was a fairly poor country and, well the average Irish person couldn’t afford anything bar food beer and to lesser degree cigarettes. In the year 1997 Ireland entered into a new age of prosperity and economic growth. This improved the income of the average Irish person, allowing them to spend more money and explore new areas and hobbies. By the close the first decade of twentieth first century. Ireland had moved on. Ireland now had a new breed of Irish people.

THE IRISH NERDS AND IRISH GEEKS WERE BORN

Now I myself am somewhat new to this. I believe my first steps into becoming a nerd originated
back in 2001 when I stayed up late to watch the final episode of Star trek Voyager. From there my descent began. Major headway was made in 2005 when started my first proper hobby. Star Trek the card game from decipher. The final part to my baptism as a nerd came in mid 2006 while playing a star trek card game tournament. I was waiting my next match when I came across Marvel Civil War issue no 3. Now I had grown up with the marvel cartoons of the nineties and always liked Marvel, so the thought of these heroes fighting each other in an actual superhero civil war, sent my mind ablaze. I don’t know was it the sugar rush of the junk food I was eating or the heat or even my own wish to leave the path of the typical Irish man who played sports and did nothing fantasy or science fictional and travel on a new unexplored path.

So on that day, a day unlike any other, when the Irish norm went out the window, and no amount of church doctrine or hurling or Sport or beer could stop. A normal teenager died that day and was born anew as The Irish Nerd. Ireland was the same again.

Now I fight to create a new more open Ireland. An Ireland free of its stereotype and conservative nature, but open to a new age of comics and games that involve you imagination.

Every time you read my blogs you give me hope that I can change Ireland and that my opinion matters or even people
